About Stan's Gym
We are a drug free heavy duty weight training center, this is very unusual as heavy duty gyms normally have many who train using steroids, and this is normally overlooked by the Gym owner. At Stan's Gym we encourage total health, and make a helpful stance against the usage of drugs in sport. Even though this does cost us money to make this stance, we have some of the strongest men in the Country, and Mike Joseph holds a world record in powerlifting. Stan's Gym is an ideal family gym, because Stan will not allow drug dealers to operate within the grounds. If you wish to come off drugs then Stan can help. Whatever you require, just ask Stan.
Stan's Gym has been open at 9 Aveley road Upminster Essex England for over 25 years. This is an ideal opportunity for me to tell its history. Stan's Gym began in my rented flat in Upminster when I was 19. I had began weight training over in Basildon in Perfecto Health Club. I vividly remember being very impressed by all these old men who were twice as strong as me. I had always felt strong, and I had always thought of myself as strong, but these guys were like machines. They just kept going. In the first few weeks while training at the Club, I had been watching, and there was a bench that they all used. This bench had a six foot bar with a 50 1b weight on each side. One day we were in the gym, and we were on our own, I was with my mates Nigel Black and Kim Ford.I thought to myself. I want to see if I can lift that big bar.Including the bar it weighed 120 1b. I tried with all my might and failed, this how it all happened.
We had all warmed up, so I went over to this bench, layed down under the bar and griped it. I lifted it of the the stands, balanced it over my chest, look a deep breath and lowered it to my chest, wow this was heavy. Every last effort went into my lift and I just couldn't quite straiten my arms. I jumped of the bench exhilarated, because I nearly did it. I was hooked. Then both my mates had their goes and they couldn't lift it either. The following few weeks while in the gym, the owner came in. Now he looked to me really old. The owner came over to the big bench and started adding weight to it. The owner put 200 1b on the bar got under it and started to bench it effortlessly. I thought to myself. I wan' t to be like that when I am old.
I wan' t to be strong.
This was a very inspirational time for me. I would train in Stan's Gym and I would train at Perfecto Health Club two or three times a week.
At one time Perfecto Health Club held a Powerlifting Competition. I stood there in astonishment, as I watched the winner bench press for one rep 230 1bs. I knew that for me to achieve anything within this sport I would have to be dedicated. I was soon to realize the importance of training even when I didn't feel like it. Once I had dragged myself in the gym I would begin to enjoy myself. Getting in there was difficult, it was so much easier not to pick my weights that night, or not to go out to the Club. I learnt right from the start that I had to be committed to my training days regardless of how I felt. I learned right form the beginning that I needed to become a leader, the one who would go to the gym even if non of my mates were going. Winter and summer, week in and week out, year in year out. This is the way it has to be if you wan' t to achieve anything in weight training or any other sport. When your there training lifting weights you feel great. Its just getting there.
This is what separates those who achieve and those who do not. Those who achieve just keep turning up.

Weight training has to become part of what you do !
Natural Drug Free Training is Best for our Health and Strength.
People who take drugs like steroids or growth hormone to get big and strong, cheat themselves out of finding out, what they could have achieved naturally. Most who take the short cut though using drugs, are like fire works. They burn brightly, make a big show, and go out quickly, occasionally with a bang. Meaning occasionally a person dies or becomes very sick after using Steroids etc.
I have known people who have resisted the temptation to take a short cut through using drugs. I have in many cases seen them continue to train year in and year out and be constantly making strength gains and muscle gains for over 15 years. At the same time I have known many people fall into drugs burn brightly and burn out. My friend David Sing died after taking steroids. Other friends of mine have also died due to them taking steroids, but for the sake of their families I won't put their names in print. The family of David Sing has given me permission to use David's name to warn others about the danger of taking steroids. David was very well liked, he was friendly, easy to talk to, and very helpful when it came to training advice. David was also one of the strongest men in Stan's Gym. Steroids killed this young man. So please don't take steroids, I don't want to go to another funeral because of drugs.
If you want some inspiration then take a look at Mike Joseph's section on this website. Mike Joseph has remained steroid free and look what he has achieved. A great physique and a world record.
Also take a look at Neil Morgan in our bodybuilding video. Neil won Mr Stan's Gym two years running without the use of any steroids etc.
Then take a look at Gary Longhurst. Gary a competitive bodybuilder won Mr Stan's Gym Powerlifting Competition twice without drugs.
I have watched Gary bench 3501b. Mind you Gary has been training drug free for over 15 years, it took Gary 10 years to bench press 3001b. Most people just give up to easily, they never get to realize anything close to their potential. I could go on and on as there are many who train in Stan's Gym who are incredibly strong, and none of them use steroids.
Lets be fair. We shouldn't be getting into this game to only train when we are young. No, our aim should be, to be strong when we are old.
For young men to see us train, and for them to be amazed, and think, these guys are like machines, they just keep going, and their twice as strong as me. For us to be an inspiration to the young, and not a bad example.
If you wan' t to be still training, and still be strong, when young men think your old, then be wise and say no to drugs.
