Hospital bag checklist
At around 34-36 weeks of pregnancy its a good idea to start to think of having your hospital bag packed things you will need for labour and the baby. If you are having a home birth then its still a good idea to sort a few things out so they can be found easily when the time comes. It is usually recommended to pack two bags, one with items you and the baby will need while in hospital. Your midwife or hospital should provide you with a list of things you will need its normally in you labour notes. As different hospitals provide different things. I have put together a list of things you will need.
FOR YOU
Please do not forget your maternity notes these are very important as your husband will be sent back for them.
You will need two or three maternity bras and front opening cotton nightdress's some old for the birth and some new for after the birth. A supply of breast pads, dressing gown and slippers. Underwear. Try dispose able knickers I found these to be a real help to me. And a good supply of super -absorbent stick on sanitary towels as most hospitals do not provide these for you. Also pack an over night bag with your hair brush shampoo soap towels and face cloths a small mirror and your make up tooth brushes and deodorant . If you have made a birth plan remember to take it with you. If you are plaining to use a tens machine don't forget to take it. Books or magazines in case things take a long time. Its also a good idea to take some food, some for you if you are allowed to eat during labour but some for your birthing partner they can get very hungry. My husband and I got hungry during my labour and very thirsty but your hospital should provide water for you. Don't forget any prescription drugs you take. A cheap throw away camera or your own camera with film in, as you will want the first pictures of your baby to treasure. Don't forget clothes to go home in.
FOR THE BABY
Take two packs of newborn nappies, loads of baby grows and vests incase he/she is sick. Some warm clothes to go home in or sun hat if needed. Scratch mittens. Also take a few cardigans as it might be cold in the hospital. Some hospitals provide their own milk but do check as I know of one hospital that doesn't. Muslin cloths for feeding and bibs, nappy cream, nappy sacks and cotton wool as some hospitals don't like you using baby wipes. Take lots of change for the phone incase you can't use a mobile. Take your own blanket to wrap your baby in when leaving the hospital to go home. I would like to wish you and your new family all the best.
